What Happened in 1967?

The 12 months of 1967 was a fascinating 12 months with a lot of events which it may be remembered for. 1967 began on January 1st with Canada commencing a year-long celebration of their 100th anniversary of their Confederation. On January 23rd the trial starts out for Wilhelm Harster who was charged with the killing of 82,856 Jews (including Anne Frank) when he headed German security forces through the German occupation in the Netherlands. He ended up being ultimately sentenced to fifteen years in prison. The Apollo 1 astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee are killed on January 27 when fire breaks in the Apollo spacecraft in a launch pad test out. The boxer Muhammad Ali declines military service on April 28th and he is stripped of his boxing titles and also banished from professional fighting for the next 3 years.

On May 1st, 1967 the singer, Elvis Presley marries Priscilla Beaulieu in Las Vegas, Nevada. On May 26, The Beatles launch the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band song and also on November 27th, they put out their Magical Mystery Tour full record in the US. On December 26 the Beatles video about the Magical Mystery Tour gets its world première on BBC TV in the UK. On June 5th the 6-Day War begins just as Israel launches Operation Focus attacking Egyptian Air Force airfields and the armies of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Jordan invades Israel. On June 10th that 6-Day War ends as both Israel and Syria agree to a UN negotiated cease-fire. On July 4 the Great Britain Parliament decriminalizes being gay and on August 30, Thurgood Marshall is affirmed as a Justice of the US Supreme Court. Marshall was the first Black to hold the appointment. On September 29, the timeless science fiction TV series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons shows on ITV in Great Britan. On October 17th, the musical show Hair starts off-Broadway and the subsequent year the show moves to Broadway to start its long run. Future USA senator and presidential aspirant John McCain will be shot down over North Vietnam and taken hostage on October 26th, 1967. He will be released 5 years later on. On December 11, Supersonic jet Concorde will be revealed in Toulouse, France.
